History of the family Jeanmaire from Orvin
|
Jehan Maire is mentioned in the list of lands belonging to the Church of Orvin in 1534,
but as the mayor of the village at this time was Pierre Michaux, we must consider the name
of Jean Maire here as a surname. Originally, it was formed from the first name Jean
to which was added the word 'maire' (mayor) because of the duties that a member of
this family exercised. This name also exists in other places, where it was formed in the same way.
Pierre Jeanmaire is a school teacher at Tramelan-dessous from 1667 to 1670. Jean-Jacques Jeanmaire,
lawyer, is mentioned in 1821. Abram Jeanmaire, lieutenant, born in 1726, served for 31 years
in the Swiss Regiments in France : commenced serving March 11, 1755 in the Regiment of Erlach,
where he achieved the rank of sergeant; entered as ensign in the Regiment of Eptingen on
October 17, 1760; second lieutenant on November 2, 1762; lieutenant April 5, 1767;
died at the "bains de Niederbrun", in Alsace, in June 1786.
The above information is taken from "La Seigneurie
d'Orvin".
