History of the Family Grosjean from Orvin
The name is initially used as a first name: Groz Jehan Donzel, in 1507; by 1539, one can consider it as a surname Claude Gros Jehan, though in the same document it is also employed as a first name Gros Jehan Wuilliemin. This family or a branch of the family, for a time bears the nickname Joute (Joust): Thiebauld Gro Jehan Joute, in 1534; Claude fils Gros Jehan Jouste, or even simply Claude Jouste in 1550. This surname also exists elsewhere; it was formed naturally and in many different places by affixing the nickname Gros to the very widespread Christian name Jean. In documents written in German, the name is translated as Grosshans or Grossjohan.

The above information is taken from "La Seigneurie d'Orvin". Printed first at La Chaux-de-Fonds by Courvoisier printing house in 1923, it was printed a second time, courtesy of Mr. Eric Ferrat, Litho Prestige at Drummondville in Quebec, Canada in 1980.
